Student Life at Tufts University, USA

Basics: Tufts University is a private research university and is organized into ten schools, of which only two undergraduate programs and the rest are graduate divisions. Their motto is “Peace and Light”, and the university emphasizes active citizenship and public service in all of its disciplines. It is also known for its excellent study abroad programs.

 

Academics: Forbes ranked Tufts 15th among research universities, and ranked the undergraduate school 24th in America’s Top Colleges ranking, in 2015. According to US News & World Report’s 2016 rankings, Tufts ranks 27th in the nation. It is now also counted among the “Little Ivies”. For its class of 2019, Tufts accepted 15.8% of 19,064 applicants. Its library system contains over three million volumes, of which the main library, Tisch Library, holds 2.5 million volumes.

 

Demographics: The campus is an urban one. Tufts is a small research university with a total of about 10,700 students. Of these, about 5,000 are undergraduates and the rest are postgraduates.

Collegiate Sports: Tufts competes in the New England Small College Athletic Conference in NCAA Division III. Their mascot is Jumbo the Elephant, and hence, they are nicknamed Jumbos. The Tufts men’s lacrosse team won the school’s first-ever NCAA team championship in 2010.

 

Student Life: The Student Life at Tufts University, UK is very interesting. The Tufts Daily is the daily student newspaper, which has been named by The Princeton Review as one of the best in the country, currently ranking it #12. There are 14 Greek life organizations, and about 18% of the student body is involved in Greek life. Tufts’ undergraduate student body is considered to be both ethnically and socioeconomically diverse.
