Basics: McGill University is an English-language public research university. The University bears the name of James McGill from Scotland whose bequest in 1813 formed the precursory McGill college. The university’s motto is “By work, all things increase and grow”.
Academics: The university’s academic units are organized into 11 main Faculties and Schools, and it offers degrees in diplomas in over 300 fields of study. It is one of the only two universities located outside the U.S. that are a part of the Association of American Universities. Most of its students are enrolled in the five larger faculties – Arts, Science, Medicine, Engineering, and Management. As the 2015-16 school year, McGill was ranked 1st in Canada among all its major/research universities in Maclean’s 24th annual rankings, maintain the position for the 11th consecutive year.
Demographics: McGill University is a big university with a total of about 40,000 students. Of the student body, about 27,000 are undergraduate students while the rest are postgraduates. The staff comprises of about 5,000 people of the college population. The main campus of McGill University is an urban campus.
Collegiate Sports: The athletic teams comprise of the McGill Redmen (men’s) and the McGill Martlets (women’s). McGill is currently home to 28 varsity teams and is known for its strong hockey and lacrosse programs. Their mascot is Marty the Martlet. The university colors are scarlet and white.
Student Life: The student life at McGill University, Canada is amazing. There is a student body that represents diverse geographic and linguistic backgrounds; almost half the students claim a first language other than English. There are hundreds of clubs and organizations, which are mostly centered around McGill’s student union building. McGill’s student-run publications include The McGill Daily, The Délit Français, and The McGill Tribune. However, only 2% of McGill’s student body is involved in Greek life organizations.
