For many exceptionally meritorious students, the great dream of higher education can truly feel beyond reach because of meaningful financial constraints. Even though scholarships are obtained by many students across the globe to pay for school, Indian students are often unaware of merit-based scholarships available to them. This knowledge gap often steers students toward difficult choices. Students may, for example, study in countries with lower tuition fees or forgo their dream universities.

With the paradigm shift in the educational arena, the idea should be to prioritize and help students believe in their capabilities and plan for their dream university, along with a scholarship. Not only overseas, it’s encouraging to see many private universities in India, like Krea University, Shoolini University, Plaksha University, Ashoka University, and more, integrating financial aid and scholarships as part of their offerings and neatly elaborating this information on their website with a defined mandate.

Let’s first understand the kinds of merit-based scholarships, how to confidently secure them, and their powerful effect on a student’s academic adventure.

To begin with, these scholarships are given to students based on their academic success, athletic skill, leadership skills, or other specific talents. These awards, unlike need-based scholarships, hinge on a student’s performance as well as potential, not their financial status.

Types of Merit-Based Scholarships

Several types of merit-based scholarships exist to recognize students’ diverse talents and accomplishments.

1. Academic Merit Scholarships

The main requirement for these scholarships is academic achievement. They are given out by universities, governmental agencies, and private groups to students who excel academically, score highly on standardized tests, or place near the top of their class.

Examples:

  • National Means Cum Merit Scholarship (NMMS) – A government initiative in India for academically bright students from economically weaker backgrounds.
  • Holland Scholarship – Recognizes top-performing international students studying in the Netherlands.
  • Dean/Presidential Scholarships – Offered by many US universities to students with exceptional academic records.

2. Athletic Scholarships

Students who succeed in sports and athletics are given these scholarships. Recipients must continue to excel academically while participating in competitive sports on behalf of their school at a national, state, or zonal level.

Examples:

  • NCAA Scholarships (USA) – These are given to student-athletes participating in collegiate-level sports.
  • Reliance Foundation Youth Sports Scholarship (India) – Supports talented young athletes in various disciplines.

3. School-Nominated Scholarships

Nominations for these scholarships must come from a student’s high school or college advisor. These honors are given out according to contributions to the school community, leadership abilities, and overall performance.

Examples:

  • The Morehead-Cain Scholarship (USA) – A fully funded scholarship at the University of North Carolina awarded to outstanding students nominated by their high schools.
  • Lester B. Pearson Scholarship (Canada): Fully funded scholarship for international students at the University of Toronto. Covers tuition, books, incidental fees, and full residence support for four years for students with exceptional academic achievement, creativity, and leadership.
  • Karen McKellin International Leader of Tomorrow Award (Canada): Offered by the University of British Columbia (UBC) for outstanding international students. Covers tuition and living expenses for students with strong academics, leadership skills, and community involvement.

4. Department-Specific Scholarships

Certain scholarships are tied to specific academic departments and awarded to students pursuing a particular field of study.

Examples:

  • Erasmus Mundus Joint master’s degrees – Covers tuition and living expenses for students pursuing specialized programs in European universities.
  • KVPY Fellowship (Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana), IISc Bangalore Merit-Based Scholarships, and IIT Delhi Merit Scholarship: Awarded to exceptional students in basic sciences, top-performing science and engineering students, and high-ranking B.Tech students, respectively.

5. Leadership and Community Service Scholarships

Scholarships that honor these accomplishments are available to students who have shown great leadership qualities or made contributions to their communities.

Examples:

  • Coca-Cola Scholars Program (USA) – Awards students who have made a significant impact in their communities.
  • Young India Fellowship (Ashoka University, India) – A prestigious program recognizing leadership potential.

6. Talent-Based Scholarships

Students who excel in creative disciplines, including dance, music, theater, and visual arts, are given these grants.

Examples:

  • National Scholarship for Young Artists (India) – Supports young talents in music and performing arts.
  • Parsons Design Merit Scholarships (USA) – Offered to exceptional students in fashion and design.

How to Secure a Merit-Based Scholarship?

It takes perseverance, preparation, and strategic planning to get a merit-based scholarship. However, students are encouraged to go through the websites and portals at length to carefully analyze their scholarships.

Here are some primary prerequisites:

  1. Maintaining strong Academic grades and standardized test scores
  2. Taking up additional examinations and performing well
  3. A comprehensive Profile (Leadership roles, Research, Class performance, Co-Scholastic activities, and more)
  4. Research Scholarship Opportunities Early and write additional essays to elaborate on the need for scholarships
  5. Prepare a strong application and apply to multiple scholarships

Final Thoughts

A scholarship is an important investment in a student’s potential future. Many colleges and groups see the value in helping worthy students. Therefore, opportunities for scholarships continue to grow.

Getting proper advice from your counselor at the right time is key. It’s crucial to put together a thorough set of guidelines meant to serve as a roadmap to help you navigate your dream college. Over $61 million in scholarships, including the Holland Scholarship, Dean’s Awards, Global Scholar Awards, Presidential Awards and many other merit/need awards at different universities, have been awarded to students in the last four years alone, thanks to University Connection’s thorough and well-researched Complete Application Admission Schedule (CAAS).
