Ever found yourself scrolling through your Instagram feed, feeling a hum of admiration in your chest as you come across someone else’s perfect vacation, mind-blowing promotion, or aesthetically chic home renovation? Then you are not alone. When you are constantly looking at these successful and curated stories, it’s quite natural to start comparing your everyday reality to their success moments, and that’s where the trap starts! In our overly obsessed, connected world, where every moment and milestone is meticulously created in a way to broadcast itself, it’s definitely easy to fall into the trap of COMPARISON.

Think of it in a way where social media is a highlighted reel, and not the full feature film. Here we only get to see the best angles, the most celebratory moments, and often skip on the behind the scenes which are messy, all the late-night struggles, and moments of doubts and worry that are part of each human experience. But here is the truth: your success story is not necessarily like anyone else’s. In fact, the most authentic and fulfilling version of success is the one you define for yourself, rooted in your own values, aspirations, and unique journey.

The Illusion of the Comparison Game

Our brains are wired in a way that leads to social comparison. It’s one of the primal instincts; it was a way to gauge our place in the tribe and assess our potential threats in history. However, due to digitalization and the rise of social media, the landscape has changed in unprecedented ways. We are constantly bombarded with constructed and articulated perspectives, which eventually leads to feelings of inadequacy, envy, and distorted perception of reality.

This constant exposure can lead us down a rabbit hole of “shoulds”:

  • “I should be further along in my career by now.” (Compared to that LinkedIn connection who just announced a promotion.)
  • “My vacations should look more luxurious.” (Scrolling through those envy-inducing beach photos.)
  • “My home should be more stylish.” (Gazing at those perfectly staged interiors on Instagram.)

One of the problems with these ‘shoulds’ is that often they stem from digital and social comparison, and not internally. We are constantly measuring our progress against someone else’s definition of success and fulfilling life. Breaking

So, what do we do differently to navigate the social media world without losing sight of our own path to an amazing life? Here are few steps that you can make use of to break free from the digital and social comparison trap:

1. Cultivate Self-Awareness:

Try introspecting and be mindful everyday. From time to time, question yourself: what truly matters to you? What brings you joy and happiness? Which values do you resonate with? Understanding these self-reflecting questions is the first step
in defining your success. Maybe it’s creativity, connection, making a difference, or simply living a life of peace and contentment.

2. Identify Your Definition of Success:

Once you start being more mindful, you start curating your own definition of success and what it means to you. Forget all comparison thoughts and societal expectations, and start reflecting on your own definition of success. Is it about financial freedom, meaningful relationships, or contributing to your community? Your definition can evolve over time.

3. Curate Your Digital Diet:

Be mindful and aware of the content you take in from social media. Better to unfollow the accounts that lead to
triggering feelings like inadequacy or envy. Make sure you are seeking out authentic voices that support and encourage you.

4. Practice Gratitude:

Always be grateful for what you have already and start shifting your attitude towards gratitude, which will eventually lead to reductive negativity and your feelings regarding comparison. Take a moment each and every day to appreciate all the positives in your life, whether they’rebig or small.

5. Embrace Imperfections:

Always remember that everyone faces challenges, struggles, and moments of vulnerability and worry. Be yourself and embrace your imperfections, both online and offline.

6. Connect Authentically:

Try forming more authentic and genuine connections both offline and online that support you. By making sure you are engaging in more meaningful conversations that are beyond the surface level.

Your Unique Brilliance

It’s not necessary that your path to success should look like everyone else’s. In fact, that’s what makes it the best.
Every individual is unique in their own way with their own set of experiences, challenges, and talents. Instead of focusing or getting caught in the comparison trap, it’s better to shift our focus more internally.

Ask yourself, “What does success look like and mean to you?” Take a moment to reflect on this thought every day. Your answer has the power to unlock a more fulfilling, happier, and authentic life. Keep shining, keep growing, and remember: your success lies in becoming the most authentic version of yourself.
