Dance has been a constant throughout my life, a passion deeper than words. Before I could form memories, my body instinctively moved to music. Even as a baby, no matter how upset I was, music would make me dance—random yet joyful movements, as if my body understood the language of music and movement before my mind could.
A transformative moment came when I attended my first summer boot camp at age four. Shortly after, I began formal Kathak dance classes, immersing myself in this classical Indian art form. Kathak became my world, a place where my natural affinity for dance flourished. My teachers noticed my passion and dedication, often calling me their favorite student. Over time, dance wove itself into my identity, becoming more than a hobby—it is how people know me. Beyond recognition, dance is my therapy, escape, and joy. When I dance, I am fully present, the rest of the world fading away.
Winning my first solo dance competition at five sparked a drive for excellence. Whether at school, workshops, or national competitions, I push myself to excel and break my limits. This dedication has earned me numerous national awards over the years. Kathak, especially, holds a spiritual significance for me, blending art with devotion. Wearing ghungroos (ankle bells), I feel a sacred connection as every movement becomes an offering to my tradition, teachers, and self. Kathak also inspired my interest in theatre and acting, as its storytelling relies on expressive emotions. Through dance dramas, I have brought characters to life, striving to connect with audiences authentically. My desire to master new techniques and styles fuels my growth and commitment to stand out in the broader dance community.
Dance has taught me invaluable lessons—discipline, devotion, hard work, and sincerity. It has guided me through life’s highs and lows, reminding me of my inner strength. Beyond accolades, it remains my lifelong companion through obstacles, a journey of self-discovery and spiritual fulfilment. Dance helps me express emotions that words cannot capture. It will always be at the heart of who I am, no matter where life leads me.
Counsellor’s Perspective
We wish we could showcase some of Aastha’s videos to truly capture her grace, rhythm, and deep passion for dance. Nevertheless, these images above reflect more than technical skill; they showcase her ability to tell stories and bring the essence of Kathak to life. Despite fierce competition, Aastha has always performed with purpose, whether winning major competitions or participating in cultural events with dancers from across the country. Her dedication, creativity, and hard work have always made her stand out, especially in the high-energy world of folk dance. Aastha is now headed to the University of Washington as a Pre-Arts Major, excited for this next chapter. She also made it to colleges like Rochester Institute of Technology, Drexel University, UMAss Amherst, University of Rochester, UC Davis, UC Riverside, UC Merced and more. We are incredibly proud of her journey and confident that amazing opportunities lie ahead!
